People rarely enjoy studying let alone doing it effectively. If we can’t enjoy studying, how can we expect to do it well? If we try to start by “studying how to study,” we will find a wide range of “proven” methods and all of them guaranteed success. Nonetheless, for the people who have a problem with studying, they fail for one primary reason, they have already decided that it can’t work, that studying isn’t for them. They are just forcing themselves to do it and this mindset makes it extremely difficult to even pick up a book and try.
There is a truth that can change even people like this with no hope. Think about someone who enters a deep jungle for the first time. This person would naturally be clueless about which way to go or what dangers lie ahead. Their minds would already be affected by all the movies they would have seen, images that tell them that scary animals or poisonous snakes may attack them at any moment. Even if they are well educated, that education can be useless in the jungle. But what if there was a child who knows the ins, outs and all the trails in this jungle very well. This child can be a guide, if our traveller could trust that child, they can exit the jungle safely.
The lowest level of thought tells people that they are great and that they are always correct. They will, therefore, want to teach instead of listening. The flip side, people who know that they don’t know can be taught and learn. Our shortcomings and weaknesses are never a problem. In fact, they provide perfect conditions for us to be helped and taught by those around us. Unfortunately, our life has been focussed on erasing our “wrongfulness”. This heart must be changed and that change will manifest in our lives.
To study well, we just need to start from a position where we accept that if we get the help we can do it. It is true that it is hard for us, on our own. If we have a guide to help us through this jungle called…STUDYING, WE CAN make it. The problem is that we are always trusting what we know. In this position, we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. There is no stupid or foolish child. We can all learn but in order to learn, we must want to be taught. To be taught we have to trust our teacher or guide.
We don’t need to get everything right nor do we need to make better resolutions. These things do not change the heart. For true change to happen we have to realise that we cannot move from this point of stagnation through our own will or effort. We have to accept guidance/wisdom from someone else who knows this more than I do. That is how change begins.
