Even gangs and wars are caused by isolation between people who refuse to connect. Social groups are composed of people with different personalities and abilities. Yet when they come together and complement each other, we have a successful organisation. Working together means there will be conflict, but overcoming those obstacles forms the foundation of a strong group.
Families are no different. People with differing personalities grow together, but by working through conflict, they can become a happy family. We are expected to be different. In the same way, that every snowflake is different, every human being is different. The false idea that we should all be the same has spread and has caused separation. Even twins are different in some way, but that doesn’t mean either one is better.
The foundation of proper relationships is communication. This allows us to acknowledge that we may not be as smart as our relative or neighbour, but we are still loved and valued. Many times, isolation stems from a false perception or misunderstanding. We have been schooled into thinking that we should all be “A” students and look like the celebrities we hold as role models. However, we forget that life in the limelight is very different from personal life.
It is more important to have people who can fight with our stubbornness, and share our fears and struggles. We all need people who can push us to be more than we imagined we could be. If we have these, we are far more blessed than many people we admire from a distance. Even poverty teaches humility; how to share, bond and appreciate simple things. Looking different doesn’t mean you are weird, just outstanding. Even individual elephants look different.
Every reason hold to justify staying by yourself can be a same reason why you are special and unique. Somebody must win the race and someone must cheer the winner. Staying by yourself isn’t the solution. Open your heart to someone and you will understand the strange paradox: we are all the same, but different. That difference makes coming together special and separation pointless.
