The Hero Within

MINDSET EDUCATION | JUNE 28, 2018

A famous author once said, “Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with.” What determines whether we are called a hero or a coward is what we do when faced with a challenge. The starting point is the same, so we are all scared and we all worry. What makes the difference is what we do next.

Cowards probably are very brave. In the realm of their thoughts, it is actions where they fall short. The movie, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” released in 2013, is the story of a troubled but mild-mannered office worker. He has a very active imagination where he is a superhero and he drifts back and forth between that fantasy world and reality. In real life, he just could not overcome the wall between thoughts and reality.

It is normal to think that heroes have better genes than the rest of us, maybe even superpowers. They are supposed to have huge muscles and nerves of steel. We don’t have those super abilities, so we automatically take a step back. However, anyone with the heart of a hero IS a hero. Cowards crumble before their fears and heroes push past them, that’s it!

In the movie, Walter eventually confronted his fears and found the hero within him. The hero is hidden in every one of us, the real problem is that we are quick to accept the thought that “I am a failure”. Mothers are famous for heroic deeds: when their child is in danger they forget reason or fear and just act. A mother elephant will attack an entire pride of over 10 lions to save her child.

Author Bob Riley is quoted as saying, “Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the ‘hero’ within us is revealed.” The hero is always there. Just think about the crazy things people do when they are in love. The hero we occasionally see in ourselves is always there but covered by reason and logic. You never know you can run until you are chased by a dog!

The hero is there, don’t trust what you see. Believe that we are all heroes and the next time, just try it. Instead of running, stand your ground and release the hero within YOU!
