[vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”2/3″ id=”” class=”post-content” style=””][text_output]Nowadays when we watch music videos and some movies, it seems that the secret to happiness is very clear; just get rich! When that’s the case, then we can do whatever we want, buy anything we want, go wherever we want, nobody can tell us what to do, we’ll just…be happy! But, why do so many celebrities that we admire commit suicide? Steve Jobs is practically responsible for the smartphones we all use. Who knew that everyone around him was miserable?
It simply doesn’t make sense. If I have EVERYTHING I should be happy – but is there more to life? In school, we study to get a better job, a better car, a better house and ultimately fall into the rat race. Somehow, we get absorbed into a world where we either work to live or live to work. This drive to get to the top becomes woefully empty when we do get there and find that we are alone. The need to get everything and keep everything for ourselves means we can’t have proper relationships.
A level two mindset means that we are driven and just want to succeed, but success should be the path and not the goal. The goal is happiness. To be consumed with success means ignoring the journey. Many parents work hard to succeed and give their kids everything, but end up never being a parent; they missed the point. Their children are often miserable and wish their parents were less successful. A rock star who lives to be the most loved, can lose the joy of connecting with the heart of people around him, if his goal is just success.
Climbing Mount Everest is a goal, the fun is the climb. If we just land there via helicopter, we have missed the point. Having success is the path, the goal is to have real relationships, to share the journey with people we love. Owning a mansion is meaningless if there is no one with whom we can truly share the joy of having it. Doctors who do their job just for money will soon become tired and miserable. However, one who loves to care for people will be happy and enjoy true success even with less money.
By nature, our heart will demand me-centric success. If our goal is just success, it becomes harder to trust people as we go higher up the success ladder. That is when we need people to help us to manage our hearts. When we are unable to manage our heart, our lives can only be pitiful. Even with success, a path of destruction and unhappiness awaits us. That is why some famous or successful people commit suicide.
The secret is simple – success is not just about money. It is learning to connect with others around us, that is the key. True wisdom is being able to learn from the people around us, true happiness is having people with whom we can share our heart.

I’m not there as yet but I have been working towards it. Success to me meant having money and being able to do what I want and that will make me happy. I never gave much thought to happiness as being just connected to others around me. But I understand your points. Even that famous comedian, Robin Williams, who committed suicide. After his death I found out he was going through depression, but how can someone who has a lot money be depressed? Well this post gave me more insight into why his life ended like that.
I find myself being miserable at the end of the day as I come from work because I don’t feel successful , I never thought that connecting to others is success, truly I have been caught in the rat race and end up feeling overworked and under appreciated and compensated . Truly I pray I can obtain this level 1 mindset to live not to obtain more earthly possessions and accomplishments but to obtain the hearts of those around me. I feels so fulfilling when I am able to help someone else , yet still I’m never free of the heart to want to accomplish what the world deems as success . I’m happy for these IYF mind education posts that show me what is the mind of a successful person.
