[vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”1/1″][text_output]It is often said that girls are emotional and they, “wear their hearts on their sleeves.” A phrase which means their hearts are exposed and easily bruised. But it’s not just girls, guys have emotions too, they are just poor at expressing them. All of us get hurt and have to learn to manage and overcome that pain. If men have emotions, like women, it should be okay to express them.
Human beings are complex creatures. One of the greatest differences between us and animals is our ability to think at a higher level. This high-level thinking often comes at a price though because in most instances we tend to overthink. When babies feel upset, they cry. They do not try to conceal their feelings. However, as they grow into adults, they soon learn social graces and habits that change the way they express themselves.
On the other hand, it is essential that we accept that feelings are just that; feelings, not facts. Feeling like everyone hates or likes us doesn’t make it real. Both women with their alleged feeling-intensive persona and men with their alleged feeling-deficient persona all need to accept that feelings are nothing more than that.
However, when these feelings go unexpressed, they do not benefit the holder any more than they do the other uninformed party. When they remain in our minds and never get “fact-checked”, they tend to cause contention and stress. The confusion between feelings and facts remains a major source of stress for many people. Feelings are real and can be overpowering. The thing is, far too many people follow their feelings down a road leading to depression.
Children often feel that their parents don’t care while parents feel like children don’t consider them. Wives feel that their husbands couldn’t care less and on the flip side, husbands feel like their wives don’t respect them. These are just a few examples, and we could list many more of these similar realities. The solution, however, is simple: conversation. Expressing how we feel one to the other and more importantly, listening — carefully.
We could actually be struggling with something that couldn’t be further from the truth. Every parent instinctively loves their child; but feelings can enter and distort the relationship. Relationships based on more than feelings will stand the test of time. Feelings are important, they are part of what makes us human, but we shouldn’t rely on them: stop, look and listen — ask! We may be surprised what we discover.
